This is a test.
ReplyDeleteI greatly appreciate the task force recommendation to increase the rigor and level of thinking skills in undergraduate classes. I believe that these are key factors for successful undergraduate education. Teaching support for faculty (e.g. recognition, awards, smaller classes, graduate student support for lecture classes, etc.) and learning supports for students (e.g. peer learning groups, how to study workshops, etc) will be essential for achieving these goals. In addition, I would recommend that the University website, which is extremely ineffective for finding information, be replaced with a more current system that matches the capabilities of the computer systems/websites at our peer institutions (e.g. see the University of Texas at Austin for an award-winning format). Further, to take advantage of our status as a research University, an effective website that functions as a clearing house for research opportunities for all our students (not just Honor students) and research faculty needs to be implemented to involve more students in scientific research. This will aid life science education at UGA and scientific literacy in our students.

I very much appreciate the efforts of the strategic planning committee to include sustainability as a strategic direction for the University. I'm particularly pleased to see the inclusion of fiscal responsibility in this section, as this is a central aspect of sustainability. However, I'm concerned that the scope of this item is too limited. Responsible stewardship of resources is only one aspect of sustainability. At its core, sustainability is about creating a quality life for all now and in the future. If we as a university are truly going to pursue this goal, we need to strive for integration across our teaching, research, and service mission. To acheive this, I would recommend that some of the strategic priorities include teaching, research and service goals and that the benchmarks reflect this. Specifically I would suggest 1. An emphasis on preparing all students to address the myriad of issues that constrain sustainability through teaching and coursework regardless of discipline, 2. That UGA focus on bridging departmental divides and fostering collaboritive sustainability research, and 3. That UGA continue and expande its assistance to communities locally, nationally and globally in their quest for a sustainable future.
